Rendering, but probably won't cause the levels to skyrocket. w glycemic load, This means that apple juice is likely to raise your blood sugar slightly if you drink just one of them. The glycemic load of apple juice averages around 12. Apple juice has an average GI of 40, placing it in the low GI category, making it a good choice for diabetics when consumed in moderation.Ī better indicator of a food's potential effect on blood sugar levels is the glycemic load, as it takes into account both the number of carbohydrates in a typical serving and the GI of the food. Just as an article in Clinical Diabetes published, foods with a low glycemic index of 55 or higher are likely to cause a spike in blood sugar, while foods with a score of 76 or higher are likely to cause a spike in blood sugar. The glycemic index measures the effect of certain foods on blood sugar levels. An 8-ounce glass of bottled apple juice contains 28 grams of carbs, a good serving of carbs in one meal. Diabetics who count carbohydrates aim for 45 to 65 grams of carbohydrates per meal. However, apple juice is not the best drink for diabetics due to its effect on blood sugar.Ī regular intake of carbohydrates with each meal can help people with diabetes control their blood sugar levels. Apple juice is often fortified to provide more than 100 percent of the daily value of vitamin C, even though fruit juice contains only 4 percent of the daily value. Both apples and apple juice can help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. These points are important because they mean that consuming too much fruit juice, or consuming fruit juice along with a high-sugar diet, can increase your risk of health problems. A high-sugar diet is also high in fructose. It's important to note that table sugar comprises 50% fructose and 50% sucrose. Fructose needs to be processed by the liver, and research shows that high-fructose diets can overwhelm the liver, leading to problems like nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. Fruit juice is high in the form of sugar called fructose. The sugar in fruit juices can cause blood sugar to rise significantly, increasing the risk of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).

Here, the regular book reviewer Coline sports a pixie haircut, hired to write the feature of the month for the women’s magazine she contributes to. But through Bruno Coulais’ stringy score - with Handel’s commanding Sarabande, the famous undercurrent of “Barry Lyndon,” thrown in to propel the mood in brooding depths- Bonitzer seizes a similar taste during this backstory segment. The backward leap and the events that take place within the flashback aren’t exactly David Lynch-level uncanny. Using this conversation as a framing device, Bonitzer takes us three years back, to a launderette where Coline and her beautiful painter neighbor, the often rebelliously shoeless Azar (Iliana Lolic), bicker about life and desire. (The relationship of the two isn’t tidily explained in accordance with the guarded attitude of “Spellbound.”) This mode is palpable moments after the train incident, when Coline come across her longtime friend and colleague Sylvain (Nicolas Maury), recounting her bizarre chance encounter. In that regard, his “Spellbound” is suitably oblique and hypnotic, qualities that will appeal to the same theatrical audience that showed up for Olivier Assayas’ considerably more astute “Personal Shopper” and “The Clouds of Sils Maria.”Įven when it feels like Bonitzer is headed nowhere with this loose, contemporary adaptation of Henry James’ short story “The Way It Came,” his film (co-written by Agnès de Sacy) attractively carries traces of a formal costume drama, fashioned inside a melancholic mold. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the prolific French writer-director - recently of “Right Here Right Now,” another twisty tale where past secrets come to loom large on the present - seems more concerned with aimlessly tiptoeing around death, grief and regret like a ghost, than offering definitive instructions to the living on how to deal with such deeply human troubles. Through this brief foggy encounter and a few minutes of polite yet uncomfortable small talk, we grasp that there is some thorny history there, which Bonitzer’s intriguing yarn unpacks with otherworldly grace, but not always earthbound wisdom or authority. The man that’s appeared out of thin air is none other than Simon ( Nicolas Duvauchelle), who evidently stepped out of the same shuttered subway line. Once her train gets stalled, Coline exits, though almost shockingly unfazed, strolling through the streets until a chance encounter taps her on the shoulder. Clad in a chic trench coat and styled with a noticeably old-fashioned, side-swept up-do, freelance writer Coline (Sara Giraudeau) is about to hear that ever-unpleasant delay announcement in the Paris metro. A tale of missed connections both earthly and ethereal, Pascal Bonitzer’s haunting “Spellbound” starts underground before it creeps upward to the atmosphere and beyond. You can then take steps to mitigate the damage and “clean the nation up” with pollutant-free energy sources and the like… but that generally requires some really substantial investments, and there will always be the temptation to build something different instead.Īs I sit here writing this review I’m wearing a face mask because my entire state is blanketed in ash and smoke created by catastrophic bush fires, while our government continues to approve new mines to dig coal out of the earth. There’s short term gain for that, because powered buildings produce more goods and resources, but in the long term climate change causes sea levels to rise (destroying cities near the water), and the frequency of natural disasters escalates rapidly. Things get so much worse once your nation hits a certain level of development and starts generating electricity and otherwise introducing pollutants into the air. This has benefits (a flooding river or erupting volcano makes the soil around it more fertile and value once the danger has passed), but can also damage buildings and destroy units. There are now hurricanes, floods, volcanoes, tornadoes and the like that will affect your nation periodically. The final big element that has been added through this expansion is climate and climate change. It’s one I haven’t achieved yet (I can’t but help go after cultural victories when I play, because I do like to fill my nation with literature, music, and paintings), but even when you’re not running for a Diplomatic Victory, the World Congress adds another layer of strategic depth to the overall experience. So building up a big bank of those votes to ensure that you dominate the World Congress is how you can target the Diplomatic Victory. The more diplomacy points you earn in-game, the more votes you get, and once you win a certain number of votes, you win the game. Or make it more expensive to recruit military units. You might be able to make a luxury resource worthless for a while, for example. It works like a United Nations, where each nation gets votes that can either boost, or veto, other nations across a wide range of different topics. Midway through a game a World Congress event begins happening periodically. Each of these new civilizations and/or leaders bring genuinely new ways to play to the experience.īacking that up is an entirely new way to claim victory – a Diplomatic Victory. Mali, meanwhile, makes gold appear out of thin air, and there’s even a unique leader, Elanor of Aquitaine, who can lead either the French or the English. The Canadians like their weather cold, and can do things to make a civilization work in the frozen tundras that would ruin any other faction. The Maori start off on a boat with no sight of land. Superficially the first thing you’ll notice when turning the Gathering Storm expansion on (you can turn it off if you want to play a campaign without it) is that there is a bunch of new civilizations to play, and there are some wildly good ones in there. With that in mind, let’s talk about the expansion, because it is a good ‘un. That expansion was not dropped onto the Switch initially (though it is there now as well), so I’ve been able to play that for the first time on PS4. Thankfully, there is one thing I can review to make this content original – after the Switch release 2K put out an expansion, Gathering Storm, which really changed up the Civilization experience. So it’s all checks as far as port quality goes. The interface still works as beautifully on the Dualshock controller as it did on the Switch. There’s still an abominably bad loading time when first creating a campaign, but otherwise there’s no technical issues in playing Civilization VI on PS4. The problem with reviewing this game is that I’ve already reviewed the Switch port, and aside from the improved visual element, the quality of the game is much the same. I’d actually be annoyed at this if I didn’t love Civilization so much. Related reading: Our review of the game on Nintendo Switch |
